Dedicated and Determined: Christine's Story

Single mothers face difficult challenges in life, but our God redeems and transforms, and Heal gets to be a part of empowering women and inspiring change. Christine's story is one of a single mom who refused to be defeated in the face of adversity.

Christine was number eight out of twelve siblings born to her parents in Western Uganda. A lover of learning since childhood, she took a job as a preschool teacher. She loved teaching, but the preschool fell on hard times and was unable to continue paying her, and she couldn't continue without a steady income. So, at age 20, Christine got married and moved to Jinja to find better opportunities. There, she found a job as a housekeeper. While in Jinja, she gave birth to a son, and two years later she was blessed with twins. One of her twins, Sandra, sadly died from malaria at just 1.5 years old. Christine was devastated by the loss of her beautiful baby girl.

Though blessed with children, all was not well at home. Her husband was abusive, and she had to get out. In 2012, Christine got herself and her children out of that unsafe situation, and she became the sole provider for her two children.

After the upheaval of losing a child and a marriage, she needed healing, restoration, and people to rely on. She also needed a safe place for her children, or they would be left alone at the house while she worked. She found all of that at Heal Ministries. While she worked, her sweet children were taken care of in our childcare and our preschool. They had a safe place to play, learn, and make friends while she was empowered to work and provide for them.

We hired Christine part-time as a call-in chef, in addition to her work as a housekeeper during those early years. In 2019, we were overjoyed to bring Christine on full-time at the James Place. In 2022 she joined our executive team. Christine is natural leader who takes charge and speaks her mind, and she brings our attention to the struggles that families we serve face every day. Her life was transformed by Heal, and she is now able to be a part of empowering others. What a gift it has been to see her grow and her life change in the 11+ years we have known Christine!
