Finding True Joy

When thinking about my time spent at the James Place, it is difficult to put into words what I experienced. This community changed my heart and the way I want to live my life on this side of eternity. The way they welcomed me in and cared for each other left me in awe. The compassion and service that radiated throughout the classrooms constantly made me ask the question, “why does it feel so different here?” In my quiet times in Uganda, I started to recognize that what I was witnessing in the community at the James Place beautifully aligned with the character of Jesus- compassion and service. I saw this in Matthew 20:28, “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

My days consisted of strapping on shoes, making words with Playdough, and dancing around with Top Class. I observed the community praise God for the little things and trust He will provide for each need. As the weeks went by, I even felt the worries I usually struggle with fade as I poured into this community, experiencing overwhelming joy and life-giving relationships in return.

Uganda showed me that the simplicity of life and being present where God has you allows Him to fulfill you the most. I am so thankful I got to witness at the James Place that living a compassionate life and serving like Jesus is where you find the most joy. The bonds, stories, and now testimony I get to share about Heal will be one of the most treasured gifts I have from the Lord. I now have what feels like a family on the other side of the world.
